Many of us might be shell shocked.Govt now proposes to buy and sell gold and that too from public. What is more, gold from famous Tirupati and other temples shall be bought and sold to public who are voracious consumers of gold. After all,a large quantity of gold ultimately comes back to the temples only as donations and stay put there for no rhyme or reason.Circulation of gold can save us some imports and in the process a lot of precious dollars at this time.
Gold and land. These are the two main planks for our people's investment strategy. If one is rich and is endowed with good spare fund to invest in quantum of say 10 Lacs Rupees and above, one goes for investment in land.No other investment is so sure of a return.Almost always it returns 4 times the value in a span of 10 years as a thumb rule.If you are lucky and there is some kind of a project or highway, the value may be more.In any case, there is a pressure of population growth and land is scarce commodity. So land is the first choice for any moneyed man.
But what if the investor is not that rich yet he has a sustainable and steady income.Even it may be an unsteady income too..but some kind of income. The investor has liability and he has to save for future. The obvious choice is gold. One buys anywhere from 2gm to 10 gm of gold a month and save.Gold value always goes up and traditionally in marriages gold is a must mode of gift. Therefore, gold comes as second best investment tool.
All other instruments including bank FD and Life Insurance policies come after that. The priority for shares and MFs (except few states like Gujarat may be) comes much after that.Hence,in India we find gold gets getting imported in hordes. Our people cannot trust market or Manager, much less politicians. But they trust gold and land for future survival tool kit and instrument.
But this also explains the singular failure of our governance method and system wherein we could not harness the mainstay of our population to growth story.India story actually remains a fable,a rupkatha. Why because, our people hear it but do not take part in it.Our India Inc is interested in profit making and they may eagerly invest abroad. Our top brass find Europe and US as better places to start business.Even lesser large Corporates like Welspun may be seen taking openings in US.Not to speak of Tatas and Ambanis who have been investing hard into other continents .Bhartis are household name in Africa rather than North east India.
No doubt,we are in a soup.It is as if my house is on fire and I expect my neighbor to get a bucket of water and I standby. Now,gold has to have intra country circulation rather than making more and more dead import and spending foreign exchange. This way,we may make the bond market buoyant and may be get funds into stock market.Let us hope for the best and pray that good sense prevails. All said and done, developments cannot take place in a day,but a beginning has to be made.
